Concussion is a “hot topic” in sports medicine.  There is an increasing awareness of this injury and frequent media reports about the negative impact this injury might have on an athletes.  Netball is increasing becoming a “contact” sport.  As a result the incidence of concussion appears to be increasing.  Younger athletes and women appear to be more susceptible to sustaining a concussion – and often take longer to recover.  As a result it is important that those involved in netball have a good understanding of how to identify and manage plays who sustain this injury.

Join the team to learn more about how to diagnose and manage a concussion and learn about how this injury is best treated.  The session will also discuss the possible longer term impact concussion has on our players.  This workshop is open to all codes, not just netballers!

Dr Mark Fulcher and Dr Stephen Kara are both physicians at Axis Sports Medicine Specialists.  Mark has worked extensively in sports medicine and is especially interested in injury prevention and the treatment of concussion.  He works closely with ACC and is part of their Sports Collaboration Group.  Dr Stephen Kara works in the dedicated sports concussion clinic at Axis Sports Medicine.  Stephen has worked in rugby medicine with provincial, national and Super 14 team The Blues.  His interest in concussion stems from his time involved in contact sports.
